Captain Jim Deaver was raised in Centerville, resided in the Sunnyside/Clovis as an adult & purchased a home in Morro Bay that he & his wife, Socorro, visited often & hoped to live in someday. He worked as Fire Captain of the Sanger Fire Department & retired with over 28 years of service. After retiring, he was hired by Sanger High School where he started the Valley Regional Occupational Program Firefighter class to teach & mentor students. In 2015, he suffered cardiac arrest, resulting in severe brain damage and lost his ability to speak, walk & perform everyday functions. He has been institutionalized in an acute care facility since 2015.
Socorro established a fund in her husband's name as a means of carrying on his giving spirit, belief in serving others & devotion to promoting education. Their mission is to raise money that will aid cadets that have been accepted to attend Fresno Regional Fire Academy by providing them with financial assistance to offset the cost of tuition, uniforms & supplies, thereby supporting their pursuit of higher education & taking a part in making their dream of becoming a firefighter a reality.
