REMSEN — A young boy dressed as a pickle danced to a bagpiper as he invited visitors of the Remsen Barn Festival to try the event's famous pickle-on-a-stick.
"Pickle-on-a-stick!" Ben Becker, 10, chanted. "Pickle-on-a-stick! Who doesn't want a pickle on a stick? Everyone wants a pickle on a stick!"
The barn fest celebrated its 37th year Saturday, as Main Street transformed into a mile-long retail strip featuring more than 250 vendors. Thousands filled the streets throughout the day.
The event annually ends the summer season, as it is celebrated the last weekend of September. Temperatures stayed in the high 60s, and the sun was out most of the day.
Emily Voelker, a junior at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill school, manned a trailer that demonstrated how to turn tree sap into maple syrup. She is part of a club that makes it on school grounds and explained the process to visitors.
"It's a lot of work," Voelker said, giggling. "But it's worth it. It's worth all the hard work."
The event continues from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, beginning with a 7 a.m. package breakfast at the firehouse in Remsen. Admission to the festival is free, and there is a $5 fee for parking in Festival of the Arts lots.
At 10 a.m., there will be a free Snow Country quilt exhibit at the Remsen Arts Center and CoCo the Clown will be painting faces at booth No. 138. The Butler-Sheehan School of Irish Dance will perform at the Soda Fountain at noon, and The Old Main will perform from noon to 4:30 p.m.
